Las Vegas Motor Speedway hosts races each season during the NEXTEL series of NASCAR races. The season is split into two, a 26-race ‘regular’ season, then the ten-race ‘race for the cup’ playoff, after which a NEXTEL champion is declared.
The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) is the largest sanctioning body of motorsports in the United States. Of the three race series they sanction, the NEXTEL Cup Series is by far the most popular. Unlike Formula One, races take place on predominantly triangular or oval tracks with banked corners to enable them to be taken at greater speed.
